Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is frustrated and upset after Jose Mourinho opted to leave him out of his team for the EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday night.

Martial, the 21-year-old Frenchman who signed for Manchester United in 2015 for £58 million ($72 million), has struggled to impress Mourinho since the coach moved to Old Trafford last year.

Martial has, Mourinho said this week, failed to take his opportunities when featured in the first-team, which has seen the Portuguese coach look elsewhere.

According to The Times, Mourinho’s comments upset Martial, and he was disappointed to have been left out of the squad that lost 2-1 at the KCOM Stadium on Thursday night.

Manchester United still progressed to the final of the EFL Cup, as a 2-0 win in the first leg saw Mourinho’s side win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Southampton is the other finalist, after beating Liverpool 2-0, and will await United at Wembley Stadium for the final on February 26.
